A Magical Christmas Gift in You

December 18, 2007

You don’t often think about looking to Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol as a role model for your life.  But ironically he may actually have hit the nail on the head to all that is important to us.  Here is what he discovered for all of us to enjoy.

When Scrooge is taken by the Ghost of Christmas Past to see himself as a young intern in Fezziwig’s store they come upon a scene of great merriment and laughter.  It is the company Christmas party.  As everyone departs from the party the young Scrooge and his friend, also an intern, linger while Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig seem to be whispering in the corner.  Eventually Mr. Fezziwig calls over the boys and gives them a small pouch with several gold coins as a present.  Pretty typical Christmas fare up to this point.

The old Scrooge watching this beside the Ghost of Christmas Past gets very animated and excited when he sees this gesture.  The Ghost of Christmas Past chides Scrooge indicating that what was contained in the pouch could barely buy anything.  Why should he get so excited?

Scrooge then begins to tell us about working with Fezziwig.  You see this man was a very special man who understood everything about life through one simple concept, how to treat another person.  In the spirit of this holiday season may you enjoy these words from Scrooge as he describes what Fezziwig had to teach each of us as we go through our day.

“He has the power to render us happy or unhappy; to make our service light or burdensome; a pleasure or a toil.  Say that his power lies in words and looks. in things so slight and insignificant that it is impossible to add or count them up.  What then?   The happiness he gives is quite as great as if it cost a fortune.”

May you give fortunes to everyone you encounter this holiday season and in the coming year.  May your face reflect your happiness, your words reflect your love, and your eyes reflect how much you care.  Merry Christmas.
